Today, I’d like to introduce you to the stars of Devil Dog and Bad Wolf.

Asa held the coffee shop door open for Kendall and Seth to enter. Jambrea and Cherie were already there and waiting. Kendall hugged her friends tight in greeting. They only ever got to see each other about once a year, so this was a treat.

Kendall noticed Simon standing behind Cherie, with his usual wide-eyed expression. Josiah hovered over him protectively, also as usual. The little fox shifter was always so sure Asa, or one of the other werewolves, was going to eat him. Kendall smiled at them, giving a small wave with her fingers. Simon smiled at her, and that was something.

Jambrea asked if Kendall remembered Dov and Kane.

“Of course!” Kendall said with a smile. Kane was Asa’s Beta wolf in the Big Bone Pack. Dov had come close to killing Seth, but no one held that against him. “How’s you noggin, these days, Dov?”

Dov looked taken aback for a moment before he smiled. “I’ve been great, thanks. No urges to use any Marines as chew toys.”

“And I’m grateful,” Seth said dryly, shaking Dov’s hand. “I’ve got enough scars already.”

“And they look good on you,” said Asa, placing a loud kiss on the long scar Seth sported on his left cheek.

Seth wore his scar proudly. It was proof that he’d survived a mauling by a werebear. No small feat for a human.

Kendall selected a table by the window, out of the main flow of traffic, and giving Asa a clear view of both exits. It was habit now, after a lifetime in the company of military and law enforcement officers.

Seth returned to the table carrying each of their coffee orders. Kendall moaned into her venti white mocha with whip. Nectar of the gods.

“Okay guys, time to have some fun,” Kendall declared. “Do each of you want to answer every question? Or do you want to play a game of verbal leapfrog?”

Asa shook his head. “Is everything that comes out of your mouth double entendre?”

“No,” Kendall replied, not missing a beat. “I like to mix things up and actually use the word ‘fuck’ in a sentence.”

Seth snorted into his coffee. “Let’s alternate answers, so Asa can’t fall back on saying ‘me, too’.”

“Good idea.” Kendall turned on her tablet and searched through the document for a question she wanted to ask. “Asa, you’re up. Your position as Alpha for Big Bone Lick Pack is hereditary. What kind of work or training did you do to prepare to take over that responsibility from your father?”

Asa looked at Kendall consideringly. “Most of what I learned about being a good leader I learned from my father. Compassion, empathy, integrity, decisiveness, courage, and fairness are all characteristics I’ve been watching my father exercise all my life. Critical thinking, informed decision making, the more internal processes of leadership I learned from reading. I did a lot of reading of the same types of things taught to officers at the military academies.”

Kendall lifted her eyebrows. “I didn’t know that. I knew you were smart and well read, though. Now I know why. Seth! You’re up. What’s been the most difficult thing for you to adjust to, as the human mate to a pack of werewolves?”

“I have a hell of time telling who is who when they’re in wolf form,” Seth replied.

Kendall laughed.

“I’m serious!” Seth insisted. “I feel like it’s disrespectful to not know who I’m addressing. It sounds callous to say they all look alike, but they sort of do. I’m learning to identify the small differences in their coat patterns and markings, though. They don’t seem bothered by it, and they seem to appreciate my effort to learn telling one from the other. But it’s a challenge.”

“Okay, Asa, we’re back to you. You have a magic wardrobe that doesn’t lead to Narnia. Where does it lead to?”

Asa grinned wickedly. “Seth’s bedroom.”

“Aww, that’s sweet,” Kendall said, watching Seth place a kiss on Asa’s cheek. “Good answer. Massive boyfriend points for that. Seth, you’re up. Of all twelve Doctors, which was your first? And which is your favorite?”

“You’ve got to be kidding,” Seth said in surprise.

“Hey, the name of your story is Devil Dog and Bad Wolf. You make a TARDIS reference in the epilogue. I know you have an answer.” Kendall folded her arms over her chest.

Seth sighed. “Ten. Both questions.”

Kendall gave Seth a high five. “Me too! David Tennant is so hot!”

“And his Doctor was funny and dark both. He had the best catch phrases. A suit and trainers. That’s got to be the best costume ever. I think the best stories came out of Ten’s time, too. It really plumbed the darkness of the human mind. And the whole conflict between The Doctor and The Master, was brilliant.”

Kendall’s mouth hung open in surprise. “Seth, I love you because I created you, but that answer makes me love you even more.”

Asa snorted. “So, are we done here?”

“Well, we have to tell everyone where they can buy Big Bone Lick Pack, and how they can enter to win a special prize,” replied Kendall.

Kendall nodded. “That’s right. Now for the super incredible prize. Seth?”

“If I remember correctly, you’re giving away a Devil Dog and a Bad Wolf,” Seth answered with a smile.

Asa frowned. “Yeah. Cute,” he said dryly. “Can we go now?”

Kendall drained the last of her coffee. “Yep. Let’s hit the road.”
